Este livro discute a influência das ideologias religiosas cristãs, em especial a católica, no processo de letramento dos indivíduos pertencentes às camadas mais populares da sociedade. A Igreja, por muitos anos, influenciou através de sua ideologia povos de diversos países e diferentes continentes, seja no comportamento social ou na educação como um todo. A influência das religiões atinge de maneiras diferentes as pessoas, variando de acordo com cada classe social. Por isso, realizar uma análise histórica da influência religiosa no processo educativo permitirá determinar criticamente os aspectos positivos do letramento de cunho religioso e o problema de utilizar esse letramento como forma de dominação. Determina-se, assim, em que medida o letramento pode ocorrer via esfera religiosa possibilitando uma aproximação do individuo com as práticas de leitura e escrita e, ao mesmo tempo, relega-o à condição de ideologicamente dominado.
