Les eaux usées domestiques contiennent plus de 90 % d’eau et moins de 10 % d’impuretés, elles doivent donc être considérées comme une bénédiction et non une charge. Pour atténuer la gravité de la crise imminente de l’eau, il faut trouver des solutions de rechange novatrices à l’eau douce. La réutilisation des eaux usées traitées ou de l’eau recyclée est l’une de ces alternatives qui gagne du terrain. Des usines pilotes de réutilisation des eaux usées sont déjà en service dans de nombreux États de l’Inde. Le recyclage de l’eau consiste à réutiliser les eaux usées traitées à des fins bénéfiques comme l’irrigation agricole et paysagère, les procédés industriels, la chasse d’eau des toilettes et le remplissage d’un bassin d’eaux souterraines. La réutilisation des eaux usées à l’extérieur peut réduire la consommation d’eau potable d’un ménage de 30 à 50 % en prenant un certain nombre de précautions pour s’assurer qu’elle est sécuritaire et respectueuse de l’environnement.
