Die Isomerisierung olefinischer Doppelbindungen spielt bei vielen chemischen Prozessen und Umsetzungen eine große Rolle. Die Alkylierung aromatischer Ver­ bindungen mit Olefinen, die Hydroformylierung von Alkenen bzw. ihre Sulfati­ sierung mit Schwefelsäure sind unter dem Einfluß der notwendigen Katalysatoren von einer Bindungsisomerisierung begleitet, so daß das Endprodukt der Reaktion nie einheitlich ist, sondern immer ein Gemisch stellungsisomerer Anlagerungs­ produkte darstellt. Desgleichen macht sich die Doppelbindungsisomerisierung bei der Herstellung von Olefinen durch katalytische Dehydratisierung von Alkoholen, bei der Dehydrohalogenierung von Alkylhalogeniden, bei der Säureoligomeri­ sierung niederer Olefine zu höhermolekularen Produkten, bei der Fischer-Tropsch­ Synthese oder der katalytischen Paraffinkrackung zum Teil störend bemerkbar. Erwünscht ist die Verschiebung der Doppelbindung dagegen bei der Konju­ gierung isolierter Doppelbindungen in trocknenden Ölen, bei der Isomerisierung von Terpenkohlenwasserstoffen, bei der Oktanzahlverbesserung in Krackbenzinen mit hohem iX-Olefingehalt unter Bildung der höheroktanigen innenständigen Olefinisomeren oder bei der Herstellung endständiger Olefine bzw. endständiger funktioneller Derivate durch die Hydroborierung oder die durch Hexachloropla­ tinsäure katalysierte Silanaddition an Olefine.
