Technikgeschichte ist ein in der Schweiz wenig gepflegter For­ schungszweig. Dies ist überraschend für ein hochindustrialisiertes Land, das zu weiten Teilen von der Produktion und vom Handel technischer Güter lebt. Technische Entwicklung wird hierzulande kaum als gesellschaftliches Phänomen betrachtet. Diesen Mangel möchte das vorliegende Buch ausmerzen helfen. Es möchte dazu beitragen, dass technischer und sozialer Wandel in einem steten, sich gegenseitig beeinflussenden Spannungsverhältnis wahrgenommen werden. Die Technik ist Teil unserer Gesellschaft. Es ist ihre Abkopp­ lung von der sozialen Welt, die die Angst vor technischen Neuerun­ gen und das Desinteresse an technischen Berufen erklärt. Es ist aber auch ihre Abschottung von der natürlichen und sozialen Welt, die uns heute ökologisch so grosse Mühe bereitet. Dieses Buch baut hauptsächlich auf die Verarbeitung der bestehen­ den Literatur. Es galt, aus der reichhaltigen Fülle historischen Mate­ rials die tieferliegenden Entwicklungslinien herauszuarbeiten. Dazu konnte ich auf zahlreiche Anregungen aus Gesprächen mit Kollegin­ nen und Kollegen bauen. Ein besonderer Dank geht an Dieter Frei­ burghaus, Hans Wismann, Werner Thut und Markus Schneider für ihre kritische Durchsicht des Manuskripts. Auf der Grundlage seiner Forschungen zur landwirtschaftlichen Entwicklung nach 1800 hat Werner Thut zudem das 7. Kapitel verfasst. Markus Schneider hat das 6. Kapitel beigetragen. Es beruht auf den Recherchen für seine Lizen­ tiatsarbeit zu Organisationsproblemen der Privatbahnen. 7 Einstieg Bücher zur Geschichte der Eisenbahn füllen ganze Bibliotheken.
