Od najdawniejszych czasów starożytne cywilizacje wykorzystywały techniki do zaspokajania swoich potrzeb. Egipcjanie i Grecy wykorzystywali ciepło słoneczne. Persowie używali wiatraków. Energia kopalna jest nieodnawialną formą energii. Wyczerpuje się i ma szkodliwy wpływ na zdrowie i środowisko (nieunikniony cykl węglowy, decydujący czynnik w EMS). Energia jest odnawialna, gdy jej źródło jest niewyczerpalne przez całe życie człowieka i dlatego jest szybko odnawiana. Energie odnawialne są znane jako czyste energie. Stanowią one alternatywę dla paliw kopalnych, które są ograniczone i odpowiedzialne za dużą część emisji gazów cieplarnianych. Przynoszą one znaczne długoterminowe korzyści dla środowiska. Nie powinniśmy jednak wierzyć, że są one cudowne. Odnawialne źródła energii nie są neutralne pod względem emisji dwutlenku węgla i każde z nich ma swoje wady. Ich wspólną cechą jest to, że wytwarzają niewielką ilość zanieczyszczeń lub nie wytwarzają ich wcale, dzięki czemu pomagają zwalczać efekt cieplarniany i globalne ocieplenie.
