Proso palczaste reaguje na szeroki zakres warunków środowiskowych, z którego wytwarzane są tradycyjne śniadania 'Chachabsa', a także chleb injera, zupa z ciasta owsianego dla niemowląt i dorosłych oraz destylowane alkohole o nazwie Tella i Areke. Trendy produkcyjne wskazują, że plony prosa są zwykle znacznie niższe niż plony innych zbóż (które są uprawiane w bardziej sprzyjających warunkach). Proso stanowi 1,5 procent światowej produkcji zbóż, mimo że zajmuje około 5 procent światowych gruntów zbożowych. Produkcja prosa palczastego koncentruje się we wschodniej i południowej Afryce, gdzie wiodącymi producentami są Uganda i Tanzania. W krajach rozwiniętych produkuje się bardzo ograniczone ilości prosa, głównie na potrzeby specjalistycznego rynku o wysokiej wartości jako nasiona dla ptaków.
