Książka opisuje jakościowe badanie fenomenologiczne przeprowadzone w Izraelu w celu zrozumienia postrzegania i doświadczeń izraelskich rodziców uczniów z poważnymi niepełnosprawnościami w zakresie zaangażowania rodziców w proces IEP. Gromadzenie danych obejmowało dwa kolejne etapy. Pierwsza część procesu rozpoczęła się od przeprowadzenia wywiadów z rodzicami, których dzieci uczęszczają do szkół specjalnych w okolicy Tel Awiwu w Izraelu. W drugiej części procesu nauczyciele edukacji specjalnej zaangażowani w procesy IEP wzięli udział w grupie fokusowej i podzielili się swoimi spostrzeżeniami na temat tematów poruszonych w odpowiedziach rodziców. Analiza odpowiedzi rodziców pozwoliła wyodrębnić pięć głównych tematów: skupienie się na dziecku, poczucie własnej skuteczności rodziców, komunikacja między rodzicami a nauczycielami, współpraca między rodzicami a nauczycielami oraz zaufanie. Głównym wnioskiem z badań opisanych w niniejszej książce jest to, że zaangażowanie rodziców i skuteczna współpraca między rodzicami a nauczycielami w ramach IEP uczniów z poważnymi niepełnosprawnościami opiera się na relacjach opartych na zaufaniu i pozytywnej komunikacji między rodzinami a szkołami.
