Arbuz (Citrullus lanatus Thunb Mansf) zaliczany jest do warzyw, ale uważany jest za owoc. Uprawiany jest głównie ze względu na soczysty miąższ, który jest bardzo słodki. Surowe owoce mogą być wykorzystywane do marynowania i produkcji cukierków. Owoce są bardzo rzadko gotowane jako warzywo, gdy są niedojrzałe. W regionach półpustynnych owoce arbuza stanowią substytut wody. Sok jest również fermentowany i zagęszczany do postaci syropu cukrowego, który jest wykorzystywany w krajach zachodnich do produkcji napojów. Jako popularna roślina uprawiana w sezonie letnim, konieczne jest określenie, jak nowo opracowane genotypy reagują w warunkach polowych, dlatego w sezonie letnim 2011 r. przeprowadzono eksperyment w gospodarstwie szkoleniowym ogrodnictwa, C. P. College of Agriculture, S.D. Agricultural University w Sardarkrushinagar. W ramach eksperymentu zbadano osiem odmian: Sugar Baby, Arka Manik, Asahi Yamato, Durgapura Lal (RW-177-3), Durgapura-RW-187-2, Sonam, GP-42 i GP-3 pod kątem wzrostu, kwitnienia, ekspresji płciowej, plonu i parametrów jakościowych. Wyniki eksperymentu wykazały, że pod względem maksymalnych cech wzrostu, wczesnego kwitnienia, najwyższego plonu i cech jakościowych o najwyższym stosunku B:C, odmiana Arka Manik osiągnęła lepsze wyniki niż wszystkie inne odmiany.
