Selekcja „in vitro' może znacznie skrócić czas selekcji pożądanych cech i uzupełnić selekcję w terenie. Hodowla tkankowa „in vitro' może być wykorzystana do określenia tolerancji różnych odmian na suszę, zakładając, że istnieje korelacja między komórkami roślinnymi in vitro i in vivo. W celu określenia odporności na stres wodny badania przeprowadzono w Laboratorium Hodowli Tkanek Roślinnych, a doświadczenie obejmowało dwa czynniki: odmianę i pożywkę z różnymi środkami osmotycznymi. Wraz ze wzrostem ilości sorbitolu i PEG roślinom z pożywki trudniej było wchłonąć wodę, co symulowało wpływ suszy na mikro rośliny. Wraz ze wzrostem ilości sorbitolu lub PEG w pożywce intensywność suszy była większa. Przeprowadzono obserwacje różnych parametrów.
