Nasiona są ważnym etapem w cyklu życia roślin wyższych pod względem ich przetrwania jako rośliny uprawnej. Jest to jednostka rozprzestrzeniania się rośliny, która może przetrwać czas między dojrzewaniem nasion a następnym pokoleniem ustanowionym jako sadzonka po wykiełkowaniu. Nasiona wielu rodzimych gatunków są trudne do kiełkowania. Ważną rzeczą, którą hodowca powinien zrobić, to dowiedzieć się jak najwięcej o historii życia, ekologii i środowisku gatunków, które chce uprawiać, aby zrozumieć procesy, przez które przechodzą nasiona z gatunków docelowych w naturze. W tym projekcie przygotowano wodne ekstrakty z dwóch roślin Ocimum sanctum L i Ocimum bacillicum L. i zbadano ich wpływ na kiełkowanie nasion ciecierzycy i nasion mung. Dane wykazały, że wodne ekstrakty zwiększają szybkość kiełkowania i wzrost roślin. Dalsza analiza identyfikacji poszczególnych fitochemikaliów jest wymagana jako wzmacniacz wzrostu i kiełkowania.
