How do social and cultural constructions of gender influence the work and lives of social workers? How do they identify with their work and how does this relate to the process of identity formation? How do they manage emotional labour? How has the profession been affected by new work configurations? In search of answers, this paper presents an analysis of working conditions and relationships in social work, as well as the relationship between social constructions of gender, emotional labour and social work, highlighting the results of research conducted with social workers in Goiânia, Goiás. More than noting the massive presence of women in Social Work, it is necessary to show how professional practice is gender-oriented and how the profession is influenced by values and practices, culturally and historically associated with the female universe. In this way, this work invites us to question the sexual division of labour, the unequal division of domestic work and the importance and use of time outside work, giving a voice to the protagonists of this profession: social workers.
