Nie wiadomo nic na temat wody, którą pili rdzenni mieszkańcy przyszłej Republiki Środkowoafrykańskiej w okresie przedkolonialnym - czy była to woda pitna, woda do celów sanitarnych, czy też obie te rodzaje. Kolonizacja wprowadziła tam sposoby dostępu do wody pitnej (tradycyjne studnie, odwierty i sieć wodociągowa), a nawet ich ulepszenia (nowoczesne studnie, zagospodarowanie źródeł). Źródła te są obecnie wykorzystywane w sposób uzupełniający, w zależności od potrzeb. W niniejszej publikacji oceniono dostęp do wody i urządzeń sanitarnych na obszarach wiejskich, w szczególności w szkołach, placówkach opieki zdrowotnej (FOSA) oraz wioskach. 9,14% szkół i 18,33% placówek FOSA posiada punkt poboru wody i latrynę, podczas gdy średnio 1 491 osób w kraju ma dostęp do studni. Liczby te wskazują na niski poziom dostępu na obszarach wiejskich, który należy poprawić. Woda ma ogromne znaczenie dla rozwoju lokalnego poprzez swoją dostępność, a przede wszystkim jakość, zagrożoną przez niezdrowe środowisko: bliskość śmieci, ścieków, tradycyjnych latryn itp. Sytuacja ta ogranicza dostępność tego zasobu. Pomimo różnorodności zasobów wodnych, Republika Środkowoafrykańska nie zaspokaja potrzeb ani nie poprawia usług sanitarnych dla swojej ludności.
