Es ist nicht bekannt, welches Wasser die einheimische Bevölkerung des späteren Zentralafrikanischen Republiks vor der Kolonialzeit trank - ob Trinkwasser, sauberes Wasser oder beides. Die Kolonialisierung führte dort Formen des Zugangs zu Trinkwasser ein (traditionelle Brunnen, Bohrbrunnen und Wasserversorgungsnetze) und verbesserte diese sogar (moderne Brunnen, Erschließung von Quellen). Diese Wasserquellen werden heute je nach Bedarf ergänzend genutzt. In dieser Studie wurde der Zugang zu Wasser und sanitären Einrichtungen im ländlichen Raum untersucht, insbesondere in Schulen, Gesundheitszentren (FOSA) und Dörfern. 9,14 % der Schulen und 18,33 % der FOSA verfügen über eine Wasserstelle und eine Latrine, während im Landesdurchschnitt 1 491 Menschen Zugang zu einem Brunnen haben. Diese Zahlen zeigen einen geringen Zugang in ländlichen Gebieten, der verbessert werden muss. Wasser ist für die lokale Entwicklung von großer Bedeutung, sowohl hinsichtlich seiner Verfügbarkeit als auch vor allem seiner Qualität, die durch eine ungesunde Umgebung bedroht ist: Nähe zu Müll, Abwasser, traditionellen Latrinen usw. Ein Kontext, der die Zugänglichkeit der Ressource einschränkt. Trotz der Vielfalt der Wasserressourcen kann die Zentralafrikanische Republik weder den Bedarf decken noch die sanitären Einrichtungen für ihre Bevölkerung verbessern.
