Das Dengue-Virus (DENV) und das West-Nil-Virus (WNV), enge Verwandte aus der Familie der Flaviviridae, sind die Erreger des hämorrhagischen Dengue-Schocks bzw. der West-Nil-Meningoenzephalitis. Impfstoffe gegen diese beiden Flaviviren sind derzeit nicht verfügbar. Das Dengue-Fieber- und das West-Nil-Fieber-Virus sind sehr virulent. Sie kosten viele Menschen das Leben. Die Vororte des Bundesstaates Khartum sind landwirtschaftlich geprägte Gebiete mit Kanälen und stehenden Gewässern, die ideale Brutstätten für Mücken darstellen. Mücken sind Überträger vieler Viruserkrankungen wie Dengue- und West-Nil-Fieber. Trotz all dieser Fakten wurden bisher nur sehr wenige Studien durchgeführt, um die Seroprävalenz dieser beiden Viren zu ermitteln.
