Die Organisation der Vereinten Nationen für Erziehung, Wissenschaft und Kultur (UNESCO) ernannte Xochimilco in Mexiko-Stadt 1987 aufgrund seiner historischen Verbindung zur aztekischen Landwirtschaft und seiner ökologischen Einzigartigkeit zum Weltkulturerbe. Durch diese Ernennung zum Weltkulturerbe ist die Identität von Xochimilco fast paradox geworden. Auf der einen Seite ist es nach wie vor ein Gebiet, das an die aztekische Zivilisation des 14. Jahrhunderts erinnert, auf der anderen Seite ist es aber auch ein städtisches Viertel, das sich in seinem Aussehen nicht von anderen Teilen von Mexiko-Stadt unterscheidet. Wie kann man die ökologischen Bedürfnisse des Landes und die Bedürfnisse der Menschen in Einklang bringen? Wie sieht die Zukunft von Xochimilco aus? Wird es in 20 Jahren überhaupt noch existieren?
