L’Organisation des Nations unies pour l’éducation, la science et la culture (UNESCO) a inscrit Xochimilco, dans la ville de Mexico, au patrimoine mondial de l’humanité en 1987 en raison de son lien historique avec l’agriculture aztèque et de son caractère unique sur le plan environnemental. Grâce à cette désignation, l’identité de Xochimilco est devenue presque paradoxale. D’une part, il s’agit d’une zone qui rappelle la civilisation aztèque du XIVe siècle, mais c’est aussi un quartier urbain qui ressemble à n’importe quelle autre partie de la ville de Mexico.
