Als besondere Eigenschaften verlangt man vo~ diesen Werkstoffen einen möglichst hohen Reibwert und größte Temperatur­ beständigkeit. Zurzeit der Aufgabestellung 1955 wurden in Deutschland vornehmlich Reibwerkstoffe verwendet, die auf organischen Grundstoffen basierten. Man unterscheidet gepreßte und gewebte Beläge. Bei den ersteren werden Asbest- und Kunstfasern mit Kautschuk vermischt und zu Formstücken ver­ preßt. Bei den letzteren werden Gewebe mit zum Teil eingewebten Metall­ seelen zu Formstücken gestanzt, diese mit Kautschuk, Kunstharz und Reib­ stoffen gefüllt, in Formen gepreßt und durch Erhitzen ausgehärtet.
