Das Auftreten des Hexenbesen im Jahr 1989 in der Gemeinde Uruçuca, im Herzen der Kakaoregion im Süden Bahias, verursachte Schäden und entmutigte die Erzeuger und führte zu einem Rückgang der Produktion von 400.000 Tonnen im Jahr 1990 auf 174.000 Tonnen im Jahr 2003. Die Forschung über bewässerten Kakao in der halbtrockenen Region entwickelt sich allmählich, ist aber noch nicht sehr zahlreich und ihre Ergebnisse müssen noch genauer wissenschaftlich belegt werden, vor allem im Hinblick auf die Feldparameter der Kultur, wie z. B. den effizientesten Grundwasserspiegel und die beste Nährstoffdosis, die sich direkt auf die Produktivität des Kakaobaums auswirken, sowie auf andere technische Aspekte, die diagnostiziert werden müssen.
