In diesem Buch werden empirische Untersuchungen zur Optimierung agronomischer Praktiken für Basella alba, ein einheimisches Blattgemüse mit hohem Nährwert und wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung, vorgestellt.Masombo Bwabi bewertet systematisch die Auswirkungen von Pflanzabständen, Spalierbildung und Beschneidung auf Pflanzenhöhe, Blattproduktion, Verzweigung und Biomasseertrag unter Feldbedingungen in den Bezirken Bungoma und Busia. Unter Verwendung eines Randomized Complete Block Design und einer statistischen Analyse mit gemischten linearen Modellen von SAS identifiziert die Studie die Spaliererziehung in Kombination mit einem Doppelstammbeschnitt und einem Abstand von 20 cm als die effektivste Behandlung zur Steigerung von Wachstum und Trockenmasseertrag.Die Ergebnisse liefern wichtige Einblicke in die nachhaltige Intensivierung des einheimischen Gemüseanbaus und unterstützen damit Initiativen zur Lebensmittel- und Ernährungssicherheit in Kenia und im gesamten subsaharischen Afrika.
