Consideradas um símbolo da identidade cultural dos povos indígenas, as florestas sagradas estão fortemente degradadas no país Manon. Isto porque são sucessivamente vítimas da expansão urbana e de outras necessidades económicas. Para além das consequências desta vulnerabilidade (dificilmente reversível), assiste-se também ao declínio de numerosas espécies vegetais e animais outrora estritamente protegidas. Desta constatação resulta a seguinte questão de investigação: Qual é a opinião dos povos indígenas sobre a vulnerabilidade e o futuro das florestas sagradas no país Manon? O estudo visa explorar a diversidade biológica das florestas sagradas, a fim de conceber uma ferramenta para atenuar o seu declínio. Foram utilizados inquéritos socioecológicos por questionário e observações diretas para recolher os dados. No total, foram identificadas 17 florestas sagradas (das quais 52,94% reservadas para fins educativos) em 4 aldeias Manon. Estes espaços lendários têm beneficiado de uma exploração restrita das espécies vegetais. Cada floresta identificada é regida por um código ritual que vai desde a restrição até à proibição total de a frequentar.
