Ce livre explore la maladie artérielle périphérique (MAP) résultant de l’athérosclérose. Ce processus est causé par l’accumulation de lipides modifiés, notamment LDL oxydé, dans les artères. La MAP est une affection inflammatoire touchant les artères périphériques, avec une prévalence alarmante, affectant 10 à 26 % de la population mondiale.L’inflammation chronique est un facteur clé dans l’initiation et la progression de l’athérosclérose. Les cytokines pro-inflammatoires contribuent au dysfonctionnement endothélial et à l’accumulation de cellules inflammatoires, augmentant ainsi le risque de complications. Le livre met en lumière le rôle de la vitamine D dans la physiopathologie de la MAP. Elle régule les niveaux d’oxyde nitrique (NO) et réduit l’expression des cytokines pro-inflammatoires, limitant l’inflammation et l’accumulation de lipides dans les plaques d’athérosclérose. De plus, le polymorphisme du récepteur de la vitamine D (VDR) peut influencer la sensibilité à la vitamine D. La carence en vitamine D est fréquente, même chez des individus en bonne santé, soulignant l’importance de ce nutriment pour la prévention des maladies vasculaires.
