Prototipo del poema eroicomico europeo, la "Vita di Mecenate" di Cesare Caporali (1531-1601) fu pubblicata postuma nel 1604 in un testo alquanto addomesticato. Narrando con fin troppa arguzia la storia del principe dei protettori delle lettere, l'autore intendeva deprecare l'avvilimento del ruolo dell'intellettuale nella società del suo tempo, ma raggiungeva i suoi risultati più felici quando reinventava senza scrupoli le vicende delle guerre civili dalla morte di Cesare al trionfo di Augusto, divertendosi a trovarne i risvolti più risibili e grotteschi. Ed episodi come quello della battaglia di Azio, con la nave di Mecenate che viene abbordata dalla nave-cucina di Cleopatra e lui stesso che rischia di essere sopraffatto perché bersagliato di uova e di frittate, mentre suo cognato Murena sta per esser cotto allo spiedo dall'Arcicuoco d'Egitto, sono invenzioni degne di Rabelais.
