L’objectif de cette recherche était d’identifier les réponses efficaces apportées par les écoles aux élèves ayant subi un traumatisme induit par la violence communautaire. L’étude a examiné la victimisation indirecte et son impact sur le développement socio-émotionnel, le fonctionnement cognitif et les résultats psychosociaux de sept diplômés du district scolaire de Syracuse City. La collecte et l’analyse des données pour cette étude qualitative phénoménologique transcendantale se sont déroulées en trois phases : (a) examen des données agrégées, (b) entretiens semi-structurés et (c) rédaction de notes analytiques. Les données suggèrent des différences entre les sexes dans la manière dont les élèves font leur deuil. Les résultats indiquent que quatre facteurs principaux ont contribué à l’obtention du diplôme d’études secondaires par les participants, à savoir : (a) le système de soutien, (b) l’autodétermination, (c) le fait de rester actif et (d) la commémoration des défunts. Des recommandations ont été formulées sur les moyens par lesquels le personnel scolaire peut jouer un rôle plus direct pour aider à répondre aux besoins socio-émotionnels des élèves et les maintenir engagés sur le plan scolaire et social.
