La chemioprevenzione e il trattamento del cancro mediante composti naturali si sono affermati come un approccio promettente e pragmatico per ridurre il peso del cancro. I composti naturali hanno contribuito per oltre il 60% ai farmaci chemioterapici antitumorali attualmente in uso. L’identificazione e la caratterizzazione di nuovi composti naturali anti-glioma provenienti dalle erbe della medicina tradizionale cinese è stato l’obiettivo principale di questo libro. A differenza dei farmaci che presentano la stessa tossicità sia per le cellule tumorali che per quelle sane, abbiamo identificato composti naturali che risultano altamente tossici per le cellule tumorali, pur essendo meno tossici per quelle sane. L’induzione dell’apoptosi e l’arresto del ciclo cellulare sono stati i principali meccanismi associati agli effetti antitumorali di questi composti bioattivi. È stato riscontrato che l’induzione dello stress ossidativo fino a una soglia tossica, facilmente raggiungibile nelle cellule tumorali rispetto a quelle sane, costituisce la ragione principale della citotossicità selettiva di questi composti.
