Die Chemoprävention und Behandlung von Krebs durch Naturstoffe hat sich als vielversprechender und pragmatischer Ansatz zur Verringerung der Krebsbelastung herausgestellt. Naturstoffe machen mehr als 60 % der gängigen chemotherapeutischen Krebsmedikamente aus. Das Hauptziel dieses Buches war die Identifizierung und Charakterisierung neuartiger natürlicher Wirkstoffe gegen Gliome aus Kräutern der Traditionellen Chinesischen Medizin. Im Gegensatz zu pharmazeutischen Wirkstoffen, die sowohl für Krebszellen als auch für normale Zellen gleichermaßen toxisch sind, haben wir Naturstoffe identifiziert, die für Krebszellen sehr toxisch sind, während sie für normale Zellen weniger toxisch wirken. Die Induktion von Apoptose und der Zellzyklusstillstand waren die wichtigsten Mechanismen, die mit der krebshemmenden Wirkung dieser bioaktiven Verbindungen in Verbindung standen. Die Induktion von oxidativem Stress bis zu einer toxischen Schwelle, die in Krebszellen im Vergleich zu normalen Zellen leicht erreicht werden kann, hat sich als Hauptgrund für die selektive Zytotoxizität dieser Verbindungen herausgestellt.
