Zur Bekämpfung viraler Pflanzenkrankheiten wird die Identifizierung der Virusart als erster Schritt betrachtet. In Anbetracht der stabilen Struktur von dsRNA im Vergleich zu RNA-Molekülen ist die dsRNA-Extraktion ein vielversprechendes Instrument zur Aufklärung der viralen Genomsequenz. Die meisten RNA-Viren produzieren dsRNA-Segmente als Kopien des Virusgenoms; diese hochmolekularen Moleküle können zur Virusidentifizierung verwendet werden. Bislang wurden mehrere Anstrengungen unternommen, um dsRNA aus vielen verschiedenen Pflanzenarten zu extrahieren. In dieser Studie wurde die Entwicklung einer Methode untersucht, die weniger kostet und schnell durchgeführt werden kann.
