Lo studio ha analizzato il potenziale dell’acido folico (FA) come agente radiomodificante in embrioni di pesce zebra esposti a radiazioni ionizzanti (IR). L’FA, un micronutriente del complesso B, agisce come coenzima nel metabolismo degli aminoacidi e nella sintesi di DNA e RNA. Utilizzando saggi di vitalità cellulare, è stata determinata la concentrazione inibitoria mediana (IC50) di FA nella linea cellulare NCTC-L929 (tessuto connettivo di topo) (2,366 mg/mL). Sono stati poi effettuati test per determinare la dose letale mediana (LD50) di IR in embrioni irradiati a 4, 6 e 24 ore dalla fecondazione (hpf) (LD50, 4 hpf - 96h: 9,77 Gy e 24 hpf - 144 h: 12,85 Gy). Successivamente, sono stati effettuati test di concentrazione letale mediana (CL50) su embrioni di pesce zebra esposti per 120 ore (CL50: 0,679 mg/mL). I risultati suggeriscono che l’FA ha un potenziale radioprotettivo, proponendosi come possibile strategia terapeutica e fornendo importanti contributi per la ricerca futura. Gli organismi irradiati dopo l’incubazione con HF hanno mostrato una sopravvivenza significativa, con un aumento del 12% a 96 hpf, del 17% a 120 hpf e del 22% a 144 hpf.
