L’acqua e il cibo sono le due sostanze più essenziali per la sopravvivenza dell’umanità. Tuttavia, soprattutto nelle regioni aride e semi-aride, si sceglie di importare il cibo consumato invece di produrlo localmente, al fine di proteggere le risorse idriche disponibili per altri usi domestici, e questo viene definito commercio virtuale dell’acqua. Questo studio si è concentrato sulle regioni semi-aride della Nigeria come caso di studio. La Nigeria è uno dei principali Paesi produttori di cibo in Africa, tuttavia alcune regioni tendono a sperimentare la scarsità d’acqua quando il clima è semi-arido. In questo contesto, lo studio ha preso in considerazione una valutazione (1) dell’acqua virtuale delle colture, che include il fabbisogno idrico delle colture, le produzioni, le importazioni e le esportazioni (2) dell’impronta idrica, che include le importazioni nette e la domanda di acqua virtuale. (3) analisi costi-benefici, che comprende la valutazione dell’impatto del commercio di acqua virtuale sull’economia delle regioni attraverso l’analisi costi-benefici delle importazioni-esportazioni. Tutte e tre le sezioni di questo libro sono combinate per fornire una comprensione completa dell’impronta idrica e dei termini ad essa associati, che serviranno come informazioni preziose e significative che potrebbero essere di grande importanza per molti scienziati.
