Durante la stagione 2013/2014 è stato condotto un esperimento sul campo per valutare le prestazioni del modello CERES-Maize nella simulazione dell’effetto della data di semina (PD), del fertilizzante azotato (N) e del profilo idrico del suolo nella zona radicale sulla crescita e sulla resa del mais (Zea mays L.) presso l’Università dello Zambia (15o 24′ S, 28o 20′ E; 1261 m s.l.m.). Il disegno sperimentale era uno split plot con tre repliche, 3 PD (24 novembre, 8 dicembre e 22 dicembre) assegnati ai plot principali e 2 dosi di fertilizzante azotato (112 e 168 kg N/ha) assegnati ai sub-plot. Per la valutazione del modello sono stati utilizzati gli stadi fenologici e la biomassa, osservati nelle fasi vegetativa e riproduttiva. I profili idrici del suolo sono stati monitorati utilizzando la sonda Diviner. Il PD ha influenzato in modo significativo la resa in granella e in biomassa con P < 0,05. I coefficienti di variazione per la resa in granella e in biomassa erano inferiori al 12% e considerati efficienti. La previsione del modello relativa alla germinazione delle piante, al tempo di antesi e alla maturità era buona. La simulazione della biomassa era ragionevolmente accurata, mentre l’indice di area fogliare era meno accurato a causa dello scarso d-stat.
