Ausgehend von dem Buch von Elizabeth Bronfen: „Over her dead body: Tod, Weiblichkeit und Ästhetik' (1992) und den Modefotografien von Guy Bourdin untersucht dieses Buch die zunehmende Darstellung des weiblichen Leichnams als schön und enthalten in Modefotografien und argumentiert, dass solche Darstellungen beunruhigende und tief kodierte Verbindungen zwischen Weiblichkeit, Patriarchat und Tod konstruieren. Weiter wird der tote weibliche Körper als „Anschauungsobjekt' und Fetisch untersucht, bei dem der männliche Betrachter zum aktiven Besitzer des passiven weiblichen Körpers wird (Bronfen 1992:xiii). Darüber hinaus werden die Arbeiten feministischer Künstlerinnen wie Marlene Dumas und Penny Siopis, die in ihren Werken den weiblichen Tod darstellen, untersucht, um solche patriarchalischen Ideologien zu kommentieren und zu hinterfragen. Ziel ist es, diese Praktiken zu untergraben, indem sie den Betrachter mit einem Gefühl der Abscheu und des Grotesken in ihren Werken konfrontieren.
