È ragionevole presumere che l’acqua potabile, compresa quella in bottiglia, contenga almeno piccole quantità di alcuni contaminanti. La presenza di tali contaminanti non indica necessariamente che l’acqua comporti un rischio per la salute. La maggior parte degli studi precedenti sull’uso di estratti vegetali si è concentrata sulle acque superficiali. Questa ricerca mirava quindi a stilare un inventario degli estratti vegetali utilizzati per la depurazione dell’acqua e a effettuare test preliminari sulle prestazioni degli estratti vegetali disponibili a Rajkot per la depurazione dell’acqua domestica proveniente da pozzi poco profondi.
