I miti classici hanno molteplici funzioni. Innanzitutto, appaiono molto realistici. La vita è al tempo stesso realtà e finzione. Il mito classico incarna questa dualità attraverso divinità primordiali come Urano,Gaia, Ade, Etere e Oceano, oltre a molte altre figure che sono al tempo stesso concetti e individui. In secondo luogo, lo stesso patrimonio mitologico ha fornito metafore psicologiche fino all’epoca moderna. Le teorie sviluppate da Sigmund Freud sulla psicologia e sul comportamento umani, basate sulle storie di Elettra e di Edipo, continuano a risuonare nel tempo per aiutare a comprendere la natura umana in generale. In terzo luogo, se si considerano gli esempi tratti da Albert Camus nel libro Il mito di Sisifo e da Friedrich Nietzsche nel saggio Apollinismo e dionisismo, ad esempio, in cui si attinge ai miti classici per spiegare determinate intuizioni filosofiche, ciò testimonia il potenziale intellettuale di queste storie. Si può inoltre osservare che la civiltà classica è rimasta ancora oggi una delle forze motrici alla base di molte altre civiltà, in particolare della civiltà occidentale, soprattutto grazie alla sua maestria nella creazione dei miti e al potenziale di questi ultimi di diffondersi e rigenerarsi nel corso delle generazioni.
