Klassische Mythen erfüllen viele Zwecke. Erstens wirken sie sehr lebensnah. Das Leben ist sowohl Tatsache als auch Fiktion. Im klassischen Mythos manifestiert sich dies in Form von Urgöttern und -göttinnen wie Uranos, Gaia, Hades, Äther und Okeanos sowie vielen anderen, die sowohl Ideen als auch Individuen sind. Zweitens diente derselbe Fundus an Mythen bis in die Moderne hinein als Quelle für psychologische Metaphern. Die von Sigmund Freud auf der Grundlage der Geschichten von Elektra und Ödipus entwickelten Ideen zur menschlichen Psychologie und zum menschlichen Verhalten finden immer wieder Anklang, wenn es darum geht, die allgemeine menschliche Natur zu verstehen. Drittens zeugen die Beispiele, die beispielsweise Albert Camus in seinem Buch „Der Mythos des Sisyphos' und Friedrich Nietzsche in seinem Aufsatz „Apollinismus und Dionysismus' aus den klassischen Mythen heranziehen, um bestimmte philosophische Einsichten zu erläutern, vom intellektuellen Potenzial dieser Geschichten. Es sei auch angemerkt, dass die klassische Zivilisation nach wie vor eine der treibenden Kräfte hinter vielen anderen Zivilisationen, insbesondere der westlichen Zivilisation, geblieben ist - vor allem aufgrund ihrer Meisterschaft in der Schaffung von Mythen und des Potenzials dieser Mythen, über Generationen hinweg weitergegeben und neu belebt zu werden.
