Umwelttechnologie, und besonders produktionsintegrierte Techniken, sind zu einer Zukunftstechnologie und zum Motor technologischer Innovationen avanciert. Ihre Entwicklung stimuliert andere Technologiebereiche, darunter die Biotechnologie, Werkstofftechnik, Verfahrenstechnik, Informationstechnik und Mikrotechniken. Die Diffusion integrierter Umwelttechnologie tragt zur Modemisierung der Volkswirtschaft und dadurch zur Starkung ihrer Wettbewerbsfahigkeit bei. Inmitten hoch gesattigter Markte gehen yom Umweltschutz Impulse ffir Wachstum und Be­ schaftigung aus. Viele dieser Aufgaben erOffnen Potentiale fur neue, hochwertige Dienstleistungen und unterstfitzen den gewollten Strukturwandel. Klimaschutz, Luftreinhaltung, Gewasserschutz, Abfallvermeidung, Altlastensanie­ rung, Ressourcenschonung, kurz gesagt, eine zukunftsflihige Entwicklung von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, erfordert rasch und effizient ablaufende Anpassungs­ prozesse. Damit dieser Wandel gesellschaftlich vertraglich verlauft, sind technolo­ gische Innovationen vonnoten. Umweltschutz ist Teil der staatlichen Zukunftsvor­ sorge. Aus diesem Aufirag leitet sich die Forderung umwelttechnologischer Inno­ vationen durch das Bundesministerium fur Bildung, Wissenschaft, Forschung und· Technologie (BMBF) abo Die vorliegende Evaluation beschaftigt sich mit dem okologischen Nutzen dieser InnovationsfOrderung und zeigt, welche Impulse fur Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Technik davon ausgingen. Es wird deutlich, Umwelttechnologie ist nicht nur ein auBerst effizientes Instrument zum Schutz der Umwelt, sie starkt zugleich die tech­ nologische Kompetenz der Wirtschaft, erschlieBt ihr interessante Geschaftspoten­ tiale und stimuliert Innovationen in anderen Technologiebereichen. Mein Dank gilt allen, die zum Gelingen der Arbeit beigetragen haben, insbesondere dem BMBF als Auftraggeber. Dem interdisziplinar zusammengesetzten Team von Evaluatoren spreche ich ffir das Engagement, mit dem sie sich ihrer Aufgabe gewidmet haben, meine Anerkennung aus.
