Negli ultimi decenni i ricercatori hanno studiato e implementato numerosi metodi per contenere le perdite di fosforo (P) non puntuali. Per ridurre ulteriormente le perdite di P dall’agricoltura, gli attuali metodi di abbattimento del P devono essere modificati con tecniche aggiuntive. Una di queste tecniche prevede l’uso di materiali che trattengono il P come filtri posti nei fossi all’interno delle aree agricole. Questo studio comprende una serie di set-up di laboratorio, meso e su larga scala per identificare i potenziali materiali che trattengono il P disponibili in Finlandia. Gli studi di laboratorio hanno analizzato il potenziale di ritenzione di P di materiali freschi e atmosferici ricchi di Ca e di Fe in test di flusso. Il materiale più promettente è stato poi impiegato in filtri meso e su larga scala. Man mano che l’applicazione del materiale veniva scalata e la concentrazione di P in ingresso diminuiva, la ritenzione cumulativa di P diminuiva. L’esperimento su scala meso ha indicato che l’efficienza di rimozione del P è diminuita anche a causa della presenza di carbonio organico disciolto negli afflussi. Per quanto riguarda il filtro di grandi dimensioni, la formazione di percorsi preferenziali per l’acqua ne ha ridotto l’efficienza. Inoltre, in condizioni di flusso elevato, il filtro grande ha trattato solo una piccola parte del flusso in entrata.
