O objetivo do presente estudo consiste, portanto, em avaliar o desempenho do tratamento de efluentes de queijarias rurais através da utilização de um biofiltro. Mais especificamente, este projeto de mestrado inclui o arranque, o desenvolvimento e a operação de um biofiltro piloto, no qual o soro de leite (componente dos resíduos) é separado dos efluentes da queijaria, para alimentar (afluente) o sistema de biofiltração. Um segundo objetivo é a avaliação do processo de tratamento. A biofiltração revela-se, assim, uma boa técnica com grande potencial, simples e eficaz para tratar os efluentes líquidos das queijarias rurais. Além disso, a instalação do biofiltro piloto é fácil e o seu funcionamento é autónomo, sem necessidade de assistência regular por parte de um técnico.
