Selon Pierre Bourdieu (1986), il existe quatre types de capital : économique, culturel, social et symbolique. Cet ouvrage examine la traduction comme un échange asymétrique entre les langues dominantes et dominées, d’une part, et les relations entre les langues dominées, d’autre part. Les langues étudiées sont le persan, l’anglais, l’allemand, le français et l’arabe. Pascal Casanova (2002) considérait la traduction d’une langue dominante vers une langue dominée comme une accumulation de capital, et la traduction d’une langue dominée vers une langue dominante comme une consécration. La tendance à l’accumulation de capital a été examinée de près au cours des deux derniers siècles, tout comme la tendance à la traduction du persan vers les langues dominantes en tant que consécration. De plus, une telle relation est étudiée entre le persan et l’arabe.
