Na prossecução dos seus objectivos, o Instituto tem mantido contactos formais e informais com propriedades açucareiras, grandes e pequenos agricultores de cana-de-açúcar, investidores na indústria açucareira e outras instituições, como o Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento do Açúcar e o Conselho de Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Matérias-Primas. O instituto também colabora com cientistas de outros institutos de investigação agrícola dentro e fora da Nigéria. Através destes contactos, o Instituto deu contributos notáveis para a resolução dos problemas agrícolas da produção de cana-de-açúcar na Nigéria e fez também progressos modestos na área da criação de cana-de-açúcar e do melhoramento de variedades. O Instituto também deu contributos úteis para a formulação da política nacional do açúcar.
