L’aumento della resistenza agli antibiotici e gli effetti collaterali dei farmaci antimicotici disponibili hanno aumentato la necessità di sviluppare nuovi agenti antimicotici più efficaci. Tra i composti estratti dalle piante, i flavonoidi sono considerati possibili fonti di nuovi agenti terapeutici per le infezioni fungine, batteriche e virali. Sono stati determinati il meccanismo d’azione antimicotico e la tossicità della fisetina, un flavonoide con attività antimicotica precedentemente accertata nei confronti di Cryptococcus neoformans species complex e dei dermatofiti. I risultati presentati mostrano un profilo favorevole per portare allo studio e allo sviluppo di questa sostanza nel trattamento della criptococcosi e della dermatofitosi.
