Angesichts der stetig steigenden Nachfrage nach dieser Hülsenfrucht ist es unerlässlich, die Produktion und die Anbaufläche zu verbessern und gleichzeitig die Belastung dieser Kulturpflanze zu minimieren. Die wichtigsten Anbauländer für Kichererbsen sind Indien, die Türkei, Pakistan, Iran, Kanada, Russland und Marokko. Die größten Produzentenländer sind Indien und Pakistan. Indien steht weltweit an erster Stelle in Bezug auf Produktion und Anbaufläche, gefolgt von Pakistan. Die größten Anbaugebiete in Indien sind Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana und Karnataka. In Maharashtra steht die Kichererbse in Bezug auf Produktion und Produktivität an zweiter Stelle nach der Straucherbse.
