The United States and Sweden today are oftendescribed as opposites in regards to sex andsexuality. In 1955, Sweden became the first nation toimplement mandatory, national sex education in thepublic schools. Since then, the country has beenwidely recognized for its open and progressive viewsof sex and sexuality. In contrast, controversy existsin the U.S. as to what is appropriate sex education.Contemporary Sweden has received severe criticismfrom a number of scholars and institutions aboutteaching a narrow sex education. This researchexamine two groups of young students, theirperspectives and experiences of sex education and theprocess of developing sexual literacy using amixed-methods approach: a combination of surveys andin-person semi-structured interviews. Although thisresearch is based on a convenience sample, theoutcome of the study challenges the notion thatSwedish sex education is more progressive thanAmerican. The findings of this research also supportthe concept of sexual literacy as a model to reframesexuality education using a holistic approachfocusing on pleasure, happiness, desire and wellness.
