Les Indiens hopis et leurs ancêtres vivent en Amérique du Nord depuis des centaines d’années. Cette histoire se déroule dans la réserve hopi, au nord de l’Arizona, au début du XXᵉ siècle. Après avoir cherché le meilleur endroit où s’établir, le peuple hopi a migré vers les terres qu’il occupe aujourd’hui, à environ soixante miles à l’ouest des San Francisco Peaks, près de Flagstaff, en Arizona. Les San Francisco Peaks sont sacrés pour les Hopis comme pour les Navajos, car ils croient que c’est là que résident leurs Esprits.Cette histoire est centrée sur un garçon hopi de dix ans nommé Thomas Polywetewa, qui aime profondément son père et son grand-père. Il souhaite apprendre autant que possible sur la culture de sa tribu. Ce savoir est particulièrement important pour Thomas, car il veut vivre selon la voie hopi , telle qu’elle lui est enseignée par sa famille. Le peuple hopi est reconnu pour être travailleur et pacifique. Il se nomme lui-même Hopituh Shi-nu-mu, ce qui signifie le peuple pacifique . Les Hopis s’entraident et demeurent fidèles à leurs Esprits, s’efforçant toujours de faire ce qui est juste. Au cours de son parcours, Thomas vit de nombreuses aventures - certaines effrayantes, mais la plupart merveilleuses et passionnantes.
