The transformation of Christian worship in Late Antiquity stands among the most consequential religious developments in world history. Between the third and the seventh centuries, Christianity evolved from a frequently marginalized movement, whose adherents gathered in private homes and modest meeting places, into the dominant religious force of the Mediterranean world. This process altered not only the institutional structure of the Church or the theological content of Christian belief, but also the forms, settings, rhythms, and experiences of worship through which believers understood themselves, their communities, and their relationship with God. To study Christian worship during this period is therefore to examine one of the principal mechanisms through which an emerging religion became a civilization-shaping cultural force.
