The encounter between Christianity and Platonism ranks among the most consequential intellectual events in the history of Western civilization. Long before Christianity emerged as the dominant religious force of the Roman Empire, the philosophical tradition originating with Plato had already shaped the intellectual language through which educated people understood reality, the soul, morality, and the divine. By the time Christian thinkers began to articulate and defend their faith in the Greek-speaking world, they found themselves entering a cultural environment in which Platonic ideas had become deeply woven into the fabric of educated discourse. The history of Christianity before Augustine cannot be understood without appreciating the extent to which Christian theologians, apologists, exegetes, and spiritual writers engaged with Platonic and, later, Neoplatonic modes of thought.
