''The Story of Ireland'' by Emily Lawless is a comprehensive account of the history of Ireland, from prehistoric times to the early 20th century. The book covers the major events, figures, and movements that have shaped Ireland’s past, including the arrival of the Celts, the Viking invasions, the Norman conquest, the English colonization, the Great Famine, and the Easter Rising. Lawless also examines the cultural, social, and economic developments that have influenced Ireland’s identity, such as the emergence of Gaelic language and literature, the rise of Catholicism, and the growth of industry and trade. The book is written in a clear and accessible style, making it an ideal introduction for anyone interested in Irish history. It is also richly illustrated with maps, photographs, and artwork, bringing the story of Ireland to life. Overall, ''The Story of Ireland'' is a fascinating and informative read that offers a comprehensive overview of one of Europe’s most intriguing and complex countries. As early as the introduction of Christianity Ireland was already divided into four such aggregations of tribes--kingdoms they are commonly called--answering pretty nearly to the present four provinces, with the addition of Meath, which was the appanage of the house of Ulster, and included West Meath, Longford, and a fragment of the King’s County. Of the other four provinces, Connaught acknowledged the rule of the O’Connors, Munster that of the O’Briens, Leinster of the McMurroughs, and Ulster of the O’Neills, who were also in theory over-kings, or, as the native word was, Ard-Reaghs of the entire island. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
