The Sound of a Voice: Or The Song of the Debardeur is a novel written by Frederic S. Cozzens. The story is set in the mid-19th century along the Hudson River, where a young man named Paul Vanderhoff works as a debardeur, a laborer who transports goods up and down the river. Paul is a skilled worker but is also a bit of a dreamer, often lost in thought as he performs his job. One day, while working on a barge, he hears the beautiful voice of a woman singing from a nearby boat. The song captures his heart and he becomes obsessed with finding the woman who sang it. As Paul searches for the mysterious singer, he encounters a variety of characters along the river, including other debardeurs, boatmen, and even a group of wealthy tourists. His search leads him to a small town where he finally meets the woman behind the voice, a young and talented singer named Louise. Paul and Louise fall in love, but their relationship is complicated by their different social backgrounds and the disapproval of Louise’s father. The novel explores themes of love, class, and the beauty of the natural world. Cozzens’ vivid descriptions of the Hudson River and its surroundings transport the reader to another time and place. The Sound of a Voice is a timeless tale of love and longing, set against the backdrop of one of America’s most iconic rivers. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
