The Roman Maid: A Tragedy is a play written by Robert Hurst in 1725. The story is set in ancient Rome and follows the tragic tale of a young maid named Lavinia. Lavinia is in love with a Roman soldier named Lucius, but her father has promised her hand in marriage to another man. When Lucius is sent away to war, Lavinia is forced to marry the man her father has chosen. However, when Lucius returns from battle, he discovers Lavinia’s marriage and becomes consumed with jealousy and rage. The play explores themes of love, betrayal, and revenge, and ultimately ends in tragedy for all involved. The Roman Maid: A Tragedy is a classic example of 18th-century English drama, and is still studied and performed today.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
