The Return of Odysseus is a poetic drama in four acts written by Percy Stickney Grant and first published in 1912. The play centers around the story of Odysseus, the legendary Greek hero who fought in the Trojan War and spent ten years trying to return home to his wife and son in Ithaca. The play explores the themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the struggle to find one’s place in the world. The first act of the play takes place on the island of Aeaea, where Odysseus and his men have been stranded after their victory in the Trojan War. They encounter the sorceress Circe, who turns some of the men into pigs and attempts to seduce Odysseus. With the help of the god Hermes, Odysseus is able to resist Circe’s charms and convince her to release his men.In the second act, Odysseus and his men encounter the Sirens, who lure sailors to their deaths with their enchanting songs. Odysseus, who has been warned of the danger by the goddess Circe, orders his men to plug their ears with wax and tie him to the mast so he can hear the Sirens’ song without being tempted to steer the ship towards them.In the third act, Odysseus and his men arrive on the island of the Cyclops, where they are captured by the one-eyed giant Polyphemus. Odysseus comes up with a plan to blind Polyphemus and escape from his cave, but the Cyclops curses him and his men as they flee. The final act of the play takes place in Ithaca, where Odysseus has finally returned home after ten years of wandering. He discovers that his wife Penelope has been besieged by suitors who are vying for her hand in marriage. Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, is able to defeat the suitors and reclaim his throne.Overall, The Return of Odysseus is a poetic and dramatic retelling of one of the most famous stories in Greek mythology. It explores the themes of heroism, loyalty, and the struggle to find one’s place in the world, and is sure to captivate readers who are interested in ancient mythology and epic tales of adventure. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
