''The Princess'' is a narrative poem written by Alfred Tennyson in 1847, which tells the story of a group of women who establish a separate society from men, creating a utopian world of their own. In 1881, Tennyson recast the poem as a drama, which is now known as ''The Princess: A Medley.'' The play follows the same plot as the poem, but with added dialogue and characters. It explores themes of gender roles, education, and the power dynamics between men and women. The story centers around Princess Ida, who refuses to marry Prince Hilarion unless he abandons his patriarchal ways and joins her in creating a society where women are in charge. The play is divided into seven acts and includes musical interludes. Tennyson’s ''The Princess'' remains a significant work of Victorian literature and a pioneering feminist text, challenging traditional gender norms and advocating for women’s rights. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
