''The Physician'' is a four-act play written by Henry Arthur Jones in 1897. The story follows the life of a young doctor named Robert Macaire, who is struggling to make a name for himself in the medical profession. He is in love with a wealthy young woman named Helen, but her father disapproves of their relationship because he believes that Robert is not successful enough to provide for his daughter. Robert’s fortunes change when he is called to attend to a wealthy patient who is suffering from a mysterious illness. The patient’s wife, Lady Gwendoline, becomes infatuated with Robert and offers to help him establish himself in the medical profession. However, Robert soon discovers that Lady Gwendoline’s motives are not entirely pure, and he finds himself caught up in a web of deceit and betrayal. As the play unfolds, Robert must navigate the complex relationships between himself, Helen, Lady Gwendoline, and her husband, while also trying to establish himself as a respected physician. ''The Physician'' is a gripping drama that explores themes of love, ambition, and morality, and it remains a classic of the Victorian theatre. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
